What Happens to a Player Prop if the Player Doesn't Play, Gets Hurt or Leaves Early?

5 min read

The short answer

If a player never plays, a single-game prop is usually void and your stake returned. If he plays and leaves early, the bet can stand on his recorded stats, even after one snap. Injury protection may override that result for eligible bets. Your sportsbook's exact market rules decide.

Lamar Jackson's November 1, 2026 exit shows why a first-play injury differs from a pregame scratch.

If the player doesn't play at all

An inactive player or late scratch usually triggers a non-participation void. Void means the bet is canceled, not won. A cash stake comes back without winnings; promotional stakes follow their own terms.

DraftKings' general rules, read November 3, 2026, void non-participants unless a market is labeled "all-in," "run or not," or "all bets action." Sport-specific rules and market exceptions still matter.

Being available on the bench doesn't necessarily count as playing. But playing without a catch, carry or point isn't the same as never entering. Don't assume zero production makes an under a winner or an over refundable.

Our player prop introduction explains the bet types.

If he plays one snap and gets hurt

DraftKings' football rules, read November 3, 2026, define participation as playing at least one play. Its settlement help page says bets generally stand once a player starts or meets the playing-time requirement.

Without an applicable exception, an injured player's remaining production doesn't get estimated. A hypothetical over 49.5 receiving yards finishes below the line if he leaves with 12 yards and never returns.

Leaving because of poor performance, an ejection or a coach's decision isn't automatically an injury-protection event. Being pulled during a blowout doesn't promise your money back.

Injury protection: DraftKings Early Exit and BetMGM BetDefense

These are different programs. The details below were read on November 3, 2026; terms and availability can change.

DraftKings Early Exit and Early Exit+

DraftKings' Early Exit Protected overview covers eligible NFL full-game props, including eligible live bets, when a player leaves injured in the first half and doesn't return. Qualifying singles are void; qualifying parlay legs drop out.

This protection is now reflected in DraftKings' football house rules, not merely a discretionary refund after a headline injury. Those rules also cover illness, require team or league confirmation within two hours after the game, and exclude unders, already-decided results and specified combined-player markets. Period-specific props aren't covered by this full-game rule.

Early Exit+ adds eligible second-half protection, including overtime, for 3% of the wager amount. Select the upgrade before placing the wager. A hypothetical $10 wager costs an extra $0.30; under the football rules, that fee isn't returned when the paid injury exception voids the bet. Availability varies by market and jurisdiction.

BetMGM BetDefense

BetMGM's BetDefense explanation requires an eligible wager accepted before the first quarter ends, a first-quarter injury exit, and the player officially ruled out without returning.

Eligible cash straight-bet stakes return within 72 hours of market settlement. Qualifying parlay and same-game parlay legs are canceled and the remaining selections recalculated.

Look for the BetDefense icon. No opt-in is required, but availability varies by state or province. Unders, weekly specials and already-determined outcomes don't receive this protection. A returning player doesn't qualify.

Worked example: Lamar Jackson's first-snap exit, Week 8

NFL.com's November 1 report confirms Jackson injured his right thumb on Baltimore's first offensive snap against Buffalo. He left the 36-10 loss, with surgery and injured reserve announced afterward.

He participated. That rules out treating his appearance as a pregame absence.

But DraftKings' November 1 announcement said qualifying Jackson singles would be void and qualifying parlay legs removed. BetMGM's announcement confirmed BetDefense refunds and parlay adjustments. Both pages were read November 3.

The refund came from qualifying injury protection, not a universal rule that one snap doesn't count. Neither announcement establishes the result of every Jackson market at every sportsbook.

Parlays and same-game parlays: what happens to other legs

A leg is one selection in a parlay. A void leg usually drops out; the other selections still need to win at the recalculated price. DraftKings' and BetMGM's injury-protection pages above both describe that treatment.

Illustration: three independent +100 selections combine to +700. Removing one leaves two at +300. A $10 winning stake returns $40 total, not $80. That's ordinary parlay math, not a quote for a correlated same-game ticket.

Don't assume every sportsbook handles same-game voids identically. Check that ticket's rules and any boost requirements. Our same-game parlay guide explains why connected selections aren't priced like independent bets.

NBA and college basketball: what counts as playing?

DraftKings' basketball rules, read November 3, 2026, define participation as entering the game according to the official box score. That isn't a one-minute minimum. Its quarter-points markets require participation in the relevant quarter.

Eligible NBA full-game injury exits have separate first-half protection. DraftKings' Protected overview explicitly excludes college basketball and college football. Don't transfer an NBA protection rule to a college prop; check that competition and market separately.

Before betting, check the status and the exact prop

Check the official NFL injury report and team inactives near kickoff; recheck basketball scratches near tip-off. Save the sportsbook's market terms and your ticket, including any protection indicator.

For teammate workload changes, read how injuries change player props. For research, start at the NFL player hub and read hit rates with their sample sizes. Historical results don't establish your refund rights.

If settlement looks wrong, send sportsbook support the ticket ID, market and applicable rule. WagerLens doesn't control the sportsbook's decision. The My Bets guide explains WagerLens's separate tracked record.

FAQ

Is a player prop void if the player doesn't play?

Usually, a single-game player prop is void if the player never participates, and a cash stake is returned. Check the sportsbook's participation definition and market exceptions. Being active or warming up isn't the same as playing; entering the game without recording the stat isn't necessarily a non-participation void.

Does a prop count if the player plays one snap and gets hurt?

It can. One play meets DraftKings' football participation definition, so an injury doesn't automatically erase the bet. Eligible NFL full-game props may instead qualify for first-half Early Exit protection. The book, market, injury timing, return to play and any purchased protection determine which rule applies.

Were Lamar Jackson props refunded after his first-play injury?

DraftKings and BetMGM announced protection for eligible Lamar Jackson props after his November 1, 2026 exit against Buffalo. DraftKings voided qualifying singles and adjusted qualifying parlays; BetMGM announced cash refunds for eligible singles and canceled qualifying parlay legs. That wasn't a refund promise for every book or market.

What is DraftKings Early Exit, and what does Early Exit+ cost?

As of November 3, 2026, Early Exit Protected covers qualifying first-half NFL and NBA injury exits without a return. Early Exit+ extends eligible protection into the second half, including overtime, for a 3% wager fee. Select it before placing the wager; market and jurisdiction restrictions apply.

What happens to my parlay if one player doesn't play?

Usually, a void selection drops out and the remaining parlay is recalculated at different odds. That doesn't refund the whole ticket or erase another losing leg. Check your sportsbook's same-game parlay rules separately, along with any boost conditions, rather than expecting the original payout to survive.

How does WagerLens count a void in my tracked record?

The My Bets guide says voids and pushes remain in your history but are excluded from win rate. WagerLens grades tracked bets separately from the sportsbook. A sportsbook injury-protection refund doesn't establish how WagerLens classified the tracked market, so compare the two records rather than assuming they match.

Check the exact prop before you bet, then check the player's status before kickoff. Read the settlement rules at the sportsbook.
